Additional Information
Iboat designed by Maurizio Cossutti and built in 2018 by the Ridas Yacht & Composites OÜ shipyard in Tallinn, Estonia. It is a 37-foot ORC racer-cruiser, conceived to be competitive right from the mold, adopting the best available technologies and design practices.
The project derives from the one-off Katariina II of 2015, made by the same shipyard. The two
boats share the deck design and a similar internal layout, while the
new model features deeply revised hull lines and appendages.
The new hull features narrow and vertical V-sections at the bow, which increase grip in
the sea and ensure a smoother passage over the waves. Between the perpendiculars of the bow and the center of the boat, the geometry evolves from a V to a more rounded shape, with a progressively flatter bottom. At the stern, the sections are flat at the centerline and rise quickly towards the hull, reducing the wetted surface.
The deck is designed to offer maximum ergonomics in racing, with a spacious cockpit and
a large central steering wheel. The low and narrow cabin allows for easy movement on deck and reduces aerodynamic drag.
The interiors have a structural function and are designed to integrate with the hull structure, ensuring adequate longitudinal and transverse rigidity. The materials have been selected to ensure the best weight distribution, using lightweight composite panels at the ends and marine plywood in the central sections.
The hull and deck are made using vacuum infusion with unidirectional fiberglass. The PVC sandwich panels of the hull and deck have different characteristics based on the application area. At the bow, in areas subject to the highest loads due to slamming, a combination of high-density PVC and solid laminate has been used. All bulkheads are made of composite material and laminated to both the hull and the deck. The structural frame consists of a fully laminated stainless steel grid to the hull, capable of absorbing the high loads from the keel, mast, and shrouds.
The keel is made of lead with a steel core and is enclosed between two laminated VTR shells, made on CNC milled molds, ensuring perfect hydrodynamic geometry.
The boat is rigged with a Hall Spars carbon mast, carbon boomerang spreaders, and a thin-section carbon boom. The sail plan was developed in collaboration with North Sails and optimized through CFD analysis.
From 2018 to 2021, the boat raced in the Baltic Sea under the name ANGEL ROSE II, demonstrating high competitiveness. It achieved numerous victories in the Baltic offshore circuit, the Estonian and Finnish ORC titles, third place at the 2019 ORC European Championship in Oxelösund (Sweden), and fifth place at the 2021 ORC World Championship in Tallinn (Estonia).
In 2022, the current owner transferred the boat to the Mediterranean, renaming it VELASQUEZ.
In 2023, at the suggestion of Maurizio Cossutti and North Sails, Velasquez underwent a significant modification for the full asymmetric configuration, with the installation of a 1.6 m carbon bowsprit. The spinnaker area increased from 100 to 135 m², significantly improving performance on downwind and broad reaches, and allowing the use of a Flying Headsail, essential for offshore racing. The area of the new lightweight jib was increased to further enhance upwind performance
with light winds, remaining at the upper limit of the CDL for the ORC C class.
Managed by an experienced “corinthian” crew, Velasquez has progressively improved performance and results, reaching the podium in all major regattas of 2025: Alassio, Gavitello d’Argento, Tre Golfi, 151 Miglia, and closing the season with the victory of the ORC C Italy Cup. Sails, equipment, and maneuvers have been constantly renewed. Today Velasquez is offered in truly “turnkey” conditions, ready to compete at the top of the ORC C fleet.
