Description
Allied Mistress 39 1973Â Â
Ketch Rigged Center Cockpit
Designed by Arthur Edmunds, Jr.
The Allied Mistress 39Â is described as being "aimed at the cruising yachtsman who wants more comfort, privacy, and docility than the currently popular fin keel/spade rudder racing machine offers".
Her long keel, shallow draft and 700 sq. ft. ketch rig make her an easily driven, easily handled vessel with good potential for island cruising. Sail area can be reduced quickly and drastically by dropping the main and running under the working jib and mizzen thus reducing crew requirements.
Her accommodations have been arranged with an eye to both comfort and privacy- her owners cabin is located aft and is fitted with an enclosed head and shower, large hanging locker, and a built in dresser. Forward, a second large cabin accommodates 2 and is equipped in a similar manner.
The midship cabin houses the galley and a convertible dinette  sleeping two. A cleverly conceived passage, under the starboard cockpit seat, connects the owner's cabin and midship cabin and is fitted with chart table, workbench and oilskin locker.
Access to the engine compartment is excellent- a pair of doors in the passage provide access to all areas. Her diesel engine  is small enough to allow ample space for a generator and other auxiliary gear. The 80 gallon fuel tank and 160 gallon water tank allow for ample cruising range.
Wheel steering in the large midship cockpit and good stowage on deck in a pair of seat lockers.
She has made 2 North Atlantic passages and traversed the European sub-continent from Holland to the Mediterranean via canals and rivers. She has also cruised the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay, Chesapeake Bay, the Florida Keys, Bermuda, the Azores, the Canary Islands, Lesser and Greater Antilles, Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas.
