Description
For Sale: Fly, a Historic Essex Fishing Smack (1805-1842) One of the oldest sailing vessels still in operation in the world
We are pleased to present for sale "Fly", an Essex smack, one of the oldest and rarest sailing vessels still in operation. Built between 1805 and 1842, this wooden, non-motorized cutter rigged with a lugsail was originally designed for wild oyster fishing in the Thames estuary. Over the centuries, it has also served in coastal fishing, sea rescue, and even smuggling, making "Fly" a boat with a past as rich as it is varied.
Technical specifications:
- Overall length: 15 m
- Hull length: 10.98 m
- Beam width: 3 m
- Draft: 1.20 m
- Displacement: 7.5 T
- Construction: Larch and oak hull, lugsail rigging, tanned linen mainsail, spars refurbished in 2022.
- Equipment: VHF, GPS/sounder large screen, solar panels, complete anchoring gear, inflatable dinghy with 20 HP Honda engine.
Restoration and exceptional condition:
Fly has undergone meticulous restoration respecting its authenticity while adapting it to modern requirements. The boat is in perfect condition, with a solid and sound hull. The linen mainsail, partly handmade, reflects the attention to detail. The interior layout, rustic yet comfortable, offers functional space with a large double berth, a traditional wood stove, and ample storage.
A sailing vessel rich in history:
This unique sailing vessel could very well be the oldest pleasure yacht still sailing in the world, with origins possibly dating back to 1805. "Fly" has traversed the centuries, being at various times a fishing vessel, a fast police cutter, and an award-winning racing yacht in smack regattas. Today, it continues to sail with the same grace and robustness that have made it famous.
Sailing and safety:
Fly is equipped for offshore sailing, with a liferaft, life jackets with satellite distress beacons, and new batteries providing extended autonomy.
This sailing vessel is a perfect compromise between tradition and modern comfort, ideal for cruises where authenticity and well-being are paramount. It is not only a pleasure to sail but also a haven of peace for its occupants.
