The local paper brought sad news today from the water: Three dead on a houseboat, most likely of carbon monoxide poisoning. The source, a portable gas generator onboard. Having a portable unit in a closed-cabin boat is a bad idea. As a police spokesman said, “You have to take note; these generators give off toxic fumes. You can’t keep them in a closed environment.”
But even a generator properly installed in the engine compartment can be a risk. As the Coast Guard notes in this safety flyer:
Continuous monitoring comes in the form of a CO Detector. West Marine offers one for $110, and another with Generator Shutoff Protection for $173.
