Description
Northern Ranger II is hull number 17 out of 29 and a 2001 model year. She has been well maintained by her owner-operator couple who have enjoyed her for the past eight years. This is a dry stack Lugger main engine, ABT Trac active fin stabilized long range trawler with Northern Lights generator and a back-up Yanmar wing engine.
The current owners have decided to move on from their current cruising lifestyle to embark on more overland exploration adventures coupled with international travel and are now ready to pass on the custody of this sturdy long-range cruiser to its next owners to fulfil whatever cruising plans they may have, knowing Northern Ranger II will take them to whatever cruising destinations they may desire.
If you are in the market for a tried-and-true long range cruising vessel you will be impressed with Northern Ranger II. She is currently located at Pier 32 Marina, National City, CA, having just finished a 1000-mile transit from Puerto Escondido, BCS, MX to San Diego, CA (including a 5 day, 700-mile passage from San Jose del Cabo, BCS to Ensenada, BC, MX).
INTRODUCTION
Northern Ranger II is a 2001 Nordhavn 50 that was purchased by her third owners (Canadian) in California and has spent all of her time since the purchase cruising the waters of Pacific Mexico. After 8 years of wonderful ownership, she has been put on the market so that her sellers can transition to enjoy terrestrial based exploration and adventure, as well as more international travels. She is well prepared for long distance cruising and has been well cared for. This is the popular two stateroom layout and she is set up to cross oceans and venture on long range cruises. With only 29 Nordhavn 50’s built, Northern Ranger II represents an excellent opportunity where you can buy a tried-and-true Nordhavn at a reasonable price. Northern Ranger II provides all of the comforts of home in a world class cruising yacht.
The Nordhavn 50 was designed to look like a contemporary motor yacht - low and sleek - with a few obvious trawler features, like her Portuguese bridge and bulbous bow - both of which announce the fact that she is a ruggedly constructed long range full displacement cruiser.
Northern Ranger II was originally ordered by an experienced yachtsman who had previously owned many different vessels. She has been well maintained and is current on oil, filter and zinc changes. Her current owners lavish attention on her regularly and enjoy keeping her polished and in tip top condition.
Northern Ranger II is currently registered with the Canadian Register of Vessels under the Large Vessel Register. Her official number is 840721. While registered in Canada, she has not been imported into Canada and is not Canadian duty/tax paid. Her primary tender is licensed by the Canadian Register of Vessels under the Small Vessel Register and the tender’s license number is BC584054. Her auxiliary tender is not registered. Neither of her tenders have been imported into Canada and are not Canadian duty/tax paid.
Northern Ranger II was designed and built with a “hybrid” electrical system. Her main engine starter, bow thruster, windlass and primary exhaust stack blower are all 24V, while the balance of her house electrics are 12V.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Main Salon and Galley
You board Northern Ranger II from either the transom swim platform door or the molded-in side deck hull doors port and starboard. The cockpit has a ladder that leads up to the boat deck.
A large molded fiberglass sliding door provides entry into the saloon. The saloon and galley merge into a comfortable and functional area where you can relax, dine and converse. The teak joinery is beautiful and is well complimented by the Surrell countertops in the galley. There are two opening windows outboard port and starboard and all windows have blinds concealed in the valances. This single level area makes it easy to prepare, cook, and serve meals and refreshments while enjoying the company of guests - there is plenty of room to stand or sit while conversing. Custom interior shades along with exterior removable sunscreens ensure privacy.
To starboard is a long built in bench seat with storage beneath. To port is a large L-shaped settee with storage beneath and a beautiful high-low custom varnished teak dining table that seats six for meals. The majority of the seat boards are hinged to make access for storage easier. The teak and spruce sole is covered by wall-to-wall carpet. On the saloon side of the galley counter a 30” Vizio flat screen television with Bose sound bar is installed.
Northern Ranger II is bright and airy with extraordinary visibility and upgraded to LED overhead lights throughout the interior. The dry stack exhaust column is concealed as part of the galley bulkhead.
The galley is forward to port with plenty of counter space. This an efficient galley for cooking and preparing food and the chef can easily converse with fellow passengers seated in the saloon. There is a 200 Series Sub-Zero refrigerator (upper) and a 200 Series Subzero combo refrigerator and freezer (with icemaker) (lower) on the forward galley wall. This cold storage is supplemented by a top load 5 cu ft freezer in the pilothouse to insure plenty of fresh/frozen food on a long passage. Many of the galley drawers are on metal glides.
The Force 10 propane three burner stove and oven is forward making preparing warm meals a snap. This is protected by a propane solenoid controller which also controls the remote barbeque supply in the cockpit. The galley has a double basin stainless steel sink, the smaller basin includes a garbage disposal. The faucet is a pull-out type by Grohe. A separate filtered fresh water tap has been added for purified water used for drinking, cooking and icemaking. This is fed from one of the 4 onboard water tanks which has been isolated from the house FW system assuring fresh drinking water. The Surrell counter tops provide an expansive counter for meal preparation and includes a comfortable teak grab rail along the interior borders. Ventilation in the galley is enhanced by an opening window outboard. There is a GE Advantium microwave/convection oven with exhaust vent up high and a Broan 12” trash compactor below the counter. Forward below the microwave are doors conceal a deep pot and pan storage compartment. There are plenty of overhead and under counter lockers, many with shelves, and an assortment of drawers. One of the overhead storage lockers has a dowel system to contain loose plates, mugs, etc.
You have a choice on the Nordhavn 50 of building a pantry storage locker or a stairway down to the master stateroom. Northern Ranger II was built with the stairway option. In addition to providing more choices for moving around the boat, it also provides quicker access to the master stateroom and engine room. At the forward end of the saloon outboard, you ascend a flight of steps to arrive in the pilothouse where all of the ships navigation and operational activities are coordinated.
Pilothouse
The Nordhavn 50 is a pilothouse forward design, providing superior forward visibility. The windows are all commercial strength and quality with stainless frames and interior teak trim. The forward dash cabinetry is teak and includes charcoal colored laminate instrument panels. The overhead console and dash console contain the ship’s navigational and control instruments (see details that follow for a complete electronics inventory). There are two sliding doors (port and starboard) that lead outside to the outer decks and Portuguese bridge. Just behind the helm chair is a settee bench fronted by a fixed table (with padded liner), with charcoal laminate surface and teak grab rail borders. The settee includes stowage underneath; with a chart drawer underneath the foot landing. Behind the bench is a watch berth which covers the top loading freezer, plus an additional storage locker beside. Additional storage under the seats for ships stores features hinged tops and supports.
The main helm control is via a stainless destroyer wheel, supplemented by a jog lever to starboard. The dash controls have been logically organized to optimize the ships Nav/Com electronics. On the flat horizontal dash the main engine dual lever controls and wing engine lever shift controls are easy to reach, as is the joystick for the bow thruster and toggle for the windlass. The overhead panels were refinished in black vinyl replaced to minimize glare and reflection on night runs. There is a Lewmar fixed opening hatch above the helm chair.
Located in the center of the pilothouse is a Stidd helm chair with arm rests, providing ease of access to the navigational controls while allowing a clear view forward and to both port and starboard. Below the counter of the helm dash and just forward of the vertically mounted stainless destroyer wheel are the Yanmar wing engine and NL generator control panels.
The pilothouse is air conditioned with reverse cycle heating for optimum climate control supplying touch pad comfort whether at anchor or underway. The teak and spruce soles are protected with fitted carpeting. Heating is provided via the pilot house hydronic outlet with dedicated thermostat.
To starboard of the dash area is a panel that houses the input power selection rotary controls, the inverted and non-inverted 120V AC breakers and the 240V air conditioning and other appliances breakers. To port of the dash area is the DC panel, housing all 12V breakers. All of the electrical panels are clearly labeled and the current flow gauges are easy to read digital displays. All of the ships electrical distribution panels are hinged for access to wiring.
Audio for the vessel is provided by a Fusion MS-RA670 head unit (equipped for Bluetooth and SiriusXM service), with speakers located in the pilothouse and main salon. The vessel’s main router for Internet/WiFi service is located to forward to starboard, and is connected to a WiFi booster antenna to access weak WiFi signals at marinas, etc. (currently inoperable).
Master Stateroom and Head
The master stateroom is located below the wheelhouse and features a large queen-sized island berth running athwartships for maximum comfort while underway (and it is an ideal arrangement for getting in and out of bed without being hemmed in). You can enter the master from the saloon descending five steps or by coming forward through the pilothouse and entering from the forward stairwell landing. This stateroom was purposely finished with white laminate bulkheads and teak trim providing a light and more spacious feel. There are teak ceilings along the hull side at the head of the bed. A collection of large teak drawers is built in below the bed. The master head and shower are outboard to starboard.
There are plenty of cedar lined lockers and drawers for clothing and other personal effects. The master berth has a specially ordered custom fitted queen-size innerspring mattress. The headroom is 6’5” in this stateroom. The bed has 4’ high hanging lockers to port and starboard that are cedar lined and lighted. There is plenty of drawer storage under and beside the bed. A large dressing mirror is located on the forward bulkhead. There are two opening port lights outboard to port and the master stateroom is air-conditioned. A Caframo variable speed fan provides air movement, and special blower provides fresh air via an intake from the 2 dorade vents on the foredeck. This stateroom also benefits from the diesel heater and timer driven thermostat providing a cabin warm up when desired on cool morning.
The master stateroom is surprisingly quiet underway - benefitting from PAE's use of Nidacore in the E/R forward bulkhead. This is a comfortable and reclusive area to read or sleep, with reading lights, outside air ventilation, counter space and more. An Insignia flat screen television can be viewed from the bed. On the aft side of the head of the bed there is a Raytheon nav/com repeater.
The master stateroom connects to a large head outboard to starboard, which includes a Tecma electric fresh water toilet, Surrell counter with flush sink and a separate shower stall. The shower includes Grohe shower fixtures and has a built-in seat and floor pan with sump pump drain. The head area is molded fiberglass. This entire enclosure is designed for simple maintenance and is ventilated by an opening port light and a shower exhaust blower.
Access to the engine room is from the master stateroom via a custom-made engine room door on the aft bulkhead that features a viewing window and a double gasketed seal.
Guest Stateroom and Head
The guest stateroom is located forward, featuring an angled double bed, and is very comfortable. Storage for clothes and other items is provided by drawers under the bed and 2 cedar lined locker spaces, including a bed stand. The guest stateroom is finished with beautiful teak joinery plus a teak and spruce sole and custom fit carpet.
Outboard to starboard is a desk area with fixed chair. This is an offshore office with drawers and book cases. Air-conditioning (shared with the master stateroom) and the diesel heating system also keeps this cabin cozy. There are opening portlights to port and starboard, and two additional opening port lights in the circular area aft that incorporates the back of the Portuguese bridge providing protected air flow while underway.
Forward is a raised section that includes the guest head and a large shower with curtain. The head incorporates a large medicine cabinet with a mirror, as well as a cabinet with storage for towels and other items. The floor of the head incorporates a lift up hatch to provide access to the forward bilge area including a way to service the bow thruster. There is a large opening Lewmar hatch above the shower to improve air circulation that includes a screen. The forward shower cabinet has doors which open to provide access to the bow chain locker.
Engine Room
The engine room is located below the main saloon and is primarily accessed through the door in the aft end of the master stateroom. You can also enter from the lazarette via the aft ER door connecting the lazarette with the engine room or through a removable section of the saloon floor.
The ER is well laid out and easy to move around in, and provides approximately 5’ of headroom around the main engine. This headroom is primarily created by Nordhavn’s signature “maintenance strakes”. These ‘bulges’ on both sides of the keel give you a lot more walking space on the sides of the engine, and also provide increased speed and fuel economy. The 50 was designed simultaneously with the Nordhavn 57 and these two designs not only benefitted from extensively tank testing, but established the hull form for all future Nordhavns. The dry stack exhaust is cleanly routed up and away shielded with thermal blanket insulation and the Lugger main engine is installed on centerline and surrounded by stainless guard rails, as well as a stainless mesh belt guard at the front of the engine. Overall, there is convenient access to the working parts of the main engine and all other important machinery.
The main engine is keel cooled through a Fernstrum GRIDCOOLER® keel cooler model DX848U-E1 (“X” indicates extended cooling model), which is a significant upgrade from the originally fitted keel cooler with a claimed 30% better cooling capacity.
The ER is well lit by sealed AC florescent lights and upgraded LED lighting (including under the engine and in the bilge). One of Nordhavn’s truly innovative passage-making developments is the simplification of all ships systems; specifically, the fuel system and its relationship with the main engine, which features a keel cooled dry stack exhaust. This is a reliable and dependable performance package designed for uninterrupted continuous duty power for days on end. There is a built-in fuel transfer and filtering system to keep your diesel fresh. The entire engine room is insulated with lead sound dampening and shrouded with perforated aluminum sheeting for a clean professional look.
All of the filters and valves for fuel lines are prominently mounted on the starboard transverse fuel tank bulkhead. The arrangement was designed to be neatly “mirrored” between supply and return manifolds so you can confirm your fuel flow quickly to make sure it is correct. The through hulls located in the ER are also identified and easy to get to. The amount of space in the ER area simplifies the routine tasks like inspecting the oil level of the generator or monitoring the dripless stuffing box.
The ABT Trac stabilizer fin actuators and rams are accessible to port and starboard at the forward end of the ER. The ABT hydraulic oil reservoir is installed forward to port. Aft to port is a 12V Spectra 14 USG/hr water maker which sits behind the Yanmar wing engine (equipped with v-drive). The 12 kW Northern Lights generator is aft on the starboard side in its own sound shield.
ER ventilation is provided from two large vents in the cockpit (covered with stainless grates) which lead to air plenums on the aft bulkhead of the engine room. One of these is fitted with a Delta “T” 16” axial intake fan to provide up to 1810 cfm airflow from the external cockpit vent through the ER and up the exhaust stack. A 24V Jabsco blower (150 cfm) blows air between the dry exhaust stack and its covering insulation to cool it, while an additional Delta T Lil Champ blower (350 cfm) positively exhausts hot air from the ER up the dry exhaust stack via a 4” stainless vent line. All ventilation fans are slaved to the SeaFire shutdown system in the case of discharge of the ER SeaFire extinguisher bottle.
Northern Ranger II also has a plumbed in oil change system for easy oil changes for the main engine, transmission and generator, as well as an extension hose/tube for wing engine oil changes. There is a built- in Fireboy extinguisher, as well as a 5lb portable dry chemical extinguisher. The floorboards are all fiberglass and there is minimal use of wood in the engine room. There is a fresh water hose bib forward to starboard.
There is also a door at the aft end of the engine room for getting into the lazarette - this is particularly helpful if you are in big stormy seas and need to check on your steering - you can easily enter the lazarette without exposing yourself or your ship to the elements by having to open the cockpit sole hatch.
Lazarette
This lazarette is a working space that is easy to get around in for routine maintenance and inspection. Located beneath the aft deck cockpit, the lazarette is accessed via a fiberglass deck hatch with internal sea dogs for added security (or from the door at the aft end of the engine room). The hydraulic steering is located aft and centre. There is also an emergency tiller stored on the lazarette ceiling. There are several through hulls outboard to both port and starboard, as well as others located under the floor boards. The Victron 3000-watt inverter/battery charger is located forward to starboard, along with the Victron Cerbo monitoring system. There is a Porter Cable air compressor mounted aft to starboard providing air for the air horns located on the pilothouse roof. The ESPAR diesel furnace is located here as well as a second dedicated Fireboy system.
The lazarette has plenty of available space for storing oil, spare parts, maintenance supplies other items that a typical long-range cruiser requires. Additionally, the lazarette deck hatch has special locking brackets which can be utilized as required for security when away from the vessel and for water tightness when underway.
Cockpit and Transom/Swim Platform
This cockpit is a great place to barbeque or to just relax when at anchor. The boat deck overhang has been extended with a stainless frame with a Sunbrella cover stretched to provide additional shade. This shade has a zippered opening by the ladder to allow access to the boat deck. There is a large centerline hatch for entering the lazarette below. The port transom locker contains two large 20 lb. secured Viking fiberglass propane tanks with a separate barbeque connection and is vented. There is a boarding door to starboard in the transom to allow access to the integrated swim platform. The cockpit has both seawater and freshwater wash down taps (in the aft starboard locker). Behind the ladder to the boat deck is a cased Life Sling and throw line.
The transom has outboard deck fills for the four fuel tanks and three shore power connections (50A house, 50A AC and 30A house). The swim platform has non-skid surfaces, extra hand rails, 2 U-rail stainless staples and a folding stainless swim ladder with teak treads.
Foredeck
You access the foredeck by going forward via the Portuguese bridge through a hinged molded fiberglass door on the starboard side. The teak cap trim provides a rich accent. Inside the Portuguese bridge wall is a double door locker for storage. Immediately forward of the Portuguese bridge there is a large molded in deck box along centerline for stowing lines, hoses, shore power cords, fenders, etc. The stout stainless double anchor roller is backed by a rugged Maxwell 3500 24V electric windlass that can be operated by deck foot buttons and/or by a toggle in the pilothouse. The anchor is a 55kg Rocna and is attached to 400’ of 3/8” high test chain. The Nordhavn 50 has a self-draining anchor well that contains any muddy water running off from the chain and directs the discharge overboard to the waterline. There are two washdown spigots in the starboard bridge locker for fresh and sea water. There is a Lewmar opening hatch on centre to provide light and air for the forward guest head and cabin. Shore power connections are located forward to port and include a 50A house and 50A air conditioning connection along with combo cable TV and phone connection.
Two dorade vents provide fresh air to the master stateroom, and are removable for open water passages (replace with stainless screw-in caps).
Boat Deck, Pilothouse Roof, Mast and Boom
Access to the boat deck is via the cockpit ladder. This is a large area and transitions forward into the pilothouse roof. The exhaust stack and ship’s painted aluminum mast and boom are located forward on centre. The dry stack exhaust exits from a stainless exhaust pipe that is secured to the mast, terminating well above the boat deck.
There is a large fiberglass dock box outboard to starboard for storage. There are stainless Magma kayak/SUP holders mounted outboard of the port and starboard stainless guard rails.
The ships main tender, a 13’ 6” Achilles RIB with a 30hp Honda outboard, is located to port on the boat deck. The dinghy has canvas chaps on the pontoons for sun protection, as well as a full canvas cover. The dinghy is mounted on custom stainless chocks with quick release tie downs to secure the arrangement while underway. Launching and retrieval of the tender is accomplished via the mast and boom – there are two 12V Warn electric hoists mounted on the boom for this purpose, and the controller for these plugs into a socket located on the starboard side of the fiberglass stack. There are 2 12V batteries located in the fiberglass stack to provide boost power for operation of the boom hoists.
Forward of the boat deck is the pilothouse roof, which has been repainted to create a non-skid surface. Located on the roof are the large Perko searchlight, painted air horn trumpets, Furuno open array radar on a painted tripod and various nav/com antennas.
The mast has brackets with various antennas and instrument senders/sensors, including the Lowrance broadband radar antenna, the satellite telephone antenna [not currently connected] and the Glomex TV antenna [not currently in use]. There is also a lightning ground dissipater, wind instrument sensor, radar reflector, flag halyards and LED flood lights covering the boat deck. The mast is hinged to allow transit or interior storage if desired.
