Welcome aboard Chilkoot 42 #785!

The Grand Banks 42 Motoryacht (MY) is a distinguished member of the Grand Banks fleet, introduced in 1981. Hull #737 is believed to be the first batch of the 42 MYs produced, with the final hull (#1540) completed in 2004. Over this 23-year production run, approximately 200 of these sought-after 42-foot Motoryachts were built. Powered with reliable twin 120hp Ford Lehman 6D380s, she's only logged 4325 hours and is ready for thousands more. 

The MY series—featuring a full flush-deck, aft-cabin layout (ACMY)—was offered in 36-, 42-, 46-, and 49-foot models. The 42 MY was developed in response to growing demand in the early 1980s for more spacious, full-beam aft cabin designs. For many owners, the layout offered a more comfortable, livable arrangement that was ideal for full- or part-time liveaboards.

Grand Banks earned a stellar reputation for craftsmanship, seaworthiness, and thoughtful design throughout their dominance in the 32'–52' trawler market from 1965 to 2008. The 42 MY benefited from this legacy, drawing on the lessons learned from the Classic and Europa models. It represents an important chapter in the Grand Banks story—a custom-built production yacht that blended traditional quality with new levels of comfort and practicality.

The model’s development was shaped by seasoned naval architects, engineers, and owners. A notable influence was Tony Fleming—who, after leaving Grand Banks, owned a 42 MY for his personal use for many years. The design introduced several enhancements over the Classic, beyond the obvious increase in interior volume and the expansive aft cabin.

One significant improvement was the longer foredeck, which pushes the helm station further aft—similar to the Europa model. This design change reduces pitching in rough seas, offering a more stable ride for the operator. Wide side decks and molded steps provide easy access to the flybridge, enhancing safety and convenience.

The raised aft deck is another standout feature—an open, unobstructed space ideal for entertaining and relaxing. Its close proximity to the flybridge fosters seamless communication and connection between both social areas, making the boat feel more cohesive and livable.

Inside, the 42 MY offered flexible configurations over the years, including options for a third stateroom or, in later models, a down galley. This allowed for a larger main salon and greater versatility in layout, tailored to the needs of cruising couples and families alike.

In short, the Grand Banks 42 Motoryacht is a refined, capable cruiser with timeless appeal—combining the ruggedness of a trawler with the comfort of a luxury liveaboard. Chilkoot #785 carries on this proud tradition.

Salon Accommodations

“Chilkoot” has spent most of its life in a boathouse in the Pacific Northwest, a rare advantage that has preserved its originality and condition. Purchased five years ago in Friday Harbor, Washington, this 40-plus-year-old yacht stands out for being remarkably original and exceptionally well cared for.

The salon is accessed through either the port or starboard doors. The starboard helm door opens directly to the lower helm station—an ideal location for quick access aboard or managing lines and fenders. Visibility forward and to the sides is excellent, with aft visibility slightly reduced due to the raised aft deck, one of the few compromises of this layout.

Natural light fills the salon, creating an open and inviting atmosphere. Large aluminum-framed opening windows enhance both brightness and ventilation—a significant advantage over the painted wood frames used on the Grand Banks Classic models of the same era. The teak parquet soles remain in wonderful condition, likely preserved by years of protective carpeting, and the rest of the interior is equally impressive. The original Grand Banks headliner shows no sagging, staining, odors, or tears, and the teak bulkheads are free of water damage or neglect.

The lower helm station features a full suite of VDO instruments, navigation components, Morse engine controls, and cable steering. Opposite the helm is the practical “up galley,” equipped with a Force 10 three-burner electric stove with oven, Sub-Zero refrigerator, double stainless-steel sink, overhead cabinets, and ample drawer and locker storage.

Aft of the galley, the portside deck door leads out to the side deck. Just inside are two classic Grand Banks teak chairs with upholstered cushions, which can be easily repositioned for dining at the salon table or tucked aside when not in use. The navy-blue upholstered L-settee is located aft to starboard, paired with the signature Grand Banks yacht table, complete with bi-fold leaves and bottle storage—both in excellent condition.

Forward of the settee, a built-in cabinet houses a Whynter icemaker and liquor storage, complemented by four drawers and a countertop. This clever arrangement makes for a convenient and frequently enjoyed gathering spot—particularly welcome after a long passage.

Aft Cabin

The aft cabin, or owner’s stateroom, is accessed from the aft end of the salon via four steps. With six opening portlights, the cabin is exceptionally well-ventilated and filled with natural light. At the base of the companionway is a full-height hanging locker with double doors on the centerline, topped by a wide countertop and mirror mounted on the forward bulkhead. A Bomar deck hatch is positioned overhead for additional light and airflow.

To starboard, the enclosed stall shower is located forward, while the head compartment is opposite to port and fitted with a Dometic marine toilet. Aft of the head is a large bureau with six drawers and two cabinet doors, while in the aft port corner is a desk/vanity arrangement. The queen island berth lies slightly offset to starboard, with GB brass reading lamps and bedside tables, each providing additional storage. The starboard side of the stateroom is fitted with a long countertop and storage lockers beneath, ensuring abundant capacity for extended cruising.

Forward Cabins


Forward of the salon, four steps down past the lower helm and galley, the guest accommodations are arranged. To port, the guest stateroom is fitted with a pocket door, a queen/double offset berth, and a pull-out single canvas berth above. Two opening portlights and an overhead hatch provide ventilation. Storage is arranged with a hanging locker aft, drawers beneath the berth, and a four-drawer cabinet forward.

Opposite the companionway, the guest head includes a Dometic toilet and a full stall shower. In the forepeak, the V-berth offers two single berths with six drawers beneath, a hanging locker to starboard, and a cold-plate "holdover" refrigerator/freezer to port. Ventilation and light are provided by two opening portlights and a large overhead hatch.

Ford Lehman History

Lehman pioneered the marinization of engines as far back as 1932. By 1978, the Lehman Econ-O-Power trademark was recognized and respected by boat builders and owners throughout the world. For over 50 years, Lehman had been an organization of dedicated boatmen with a keen appreciation of the proper specification and operation of marine power. The compact design of Lehman Econ-O-Power diesels, featuring special monobloc cast iron exhaust manifolds, includes shell-type tubular heat exchangers and coolers for a streamlined appearance and long-lasting operation. The Lehman Econ-O-Power engine was built using a Ford industrial engine as the "base" unit. Lehman manufactured and provided the "conversion" equipment, which includes the parts needed to adapt the Ford engine to marine use. One of Lehmans' most popular diesels, this 380 cubic inch engine is conservatively rated at 120 horsepower at 2500 rpm. This model engine has a long history of thoroughbred performance, beginning in 1958 as the Ford Dagenham diesel. Also contributing to the popularity of this engine are the same high-performance, high-economy features that characterize all Lehman Power diesel marine engines.
The four-cycle design, high compression ratio, and overhead valves assure clean burning, odor-free combustion. The resulting maximization of fuel economy and dependable performance has established this engine as a "pacesetter" among commercial operators and a favorite of boaters.
Underlying its rugged performance is its rugged construction...a deep, rigid block. The crankshaft is equipped with large-diameter crankpins and main bearings. Four-hole injectors are fed by an efficient Simms piston-type fuel injection pump, which is driven directly by camshaft gearing. This eliminates the exposed auxiliary drive shaft and couplings that were used in earlier models. Lehman diesel marine engines turn counter-clockwise (viewed from the stern of the boat facing forward). Borg-Warner transmissions offer positive-acting, smooth, dependable performance under varied loads.
