Description
Introducing the stunning 1978 Grand Banks GB36570, a remarkable trawler that combines classic design with modern functionality. With an overall length of 36' 10", this vessel boasts a robust fiberglass hull shaped for displacement, ensuring a smooth and stable ride on the water. Powered by twin Ford Lehman 2715E diesel engines, each delivering 120 hp, the Luna Maris is equipped for reliable performance with 4-blade bronze propellers. This trawler is designed for comfort, featuring two well-appointed cabins and two heads, making it perfect for extended voyages or weekend getaways. The electric windlass adds convenience to anchoring, enhancing the overall experience. With a history of careful use, this used model is ready for new adventures. The Luna Maris is not just a boat; it’s a gateway to unforgettable memories on the water.
The current owner purchased the Luna Maris in December of 2017. By all indications the previous owner had maintained the vessel well, and had commissioned several interior renovations during his ownership. Particularly of note is the custom galley area which accommodates a much larger refrigerator and a built in microwave, which is not the standard layout for the Grand Banks. The RV sized refrigerator is powered by both DC and AC, and offers substantial space for both refrigeration and freezer.
The current owner had also looked at several Grand Banks and most of them did not show the continued care that he insists upon when buying a boat. The Luna Maris displayed a good level of maintenance and care by her previous owner in Beaufort. It was his opinion at the time that the boat was overall in above average condition when compared with other boats. The survey was performed on December 17th, 2017 and determined that in the view of the surveyor the vessel condition was noted as above average.
The boat arrived in Maine in April of 2018 with passage both in the ICW and outside. The boat performed very well and proved to be a comfortable cruiser on the trip. Upon arrival in Maine the boat was delivered to Front Street shipyard to perform engine maintenance and other minor items such as rebuilding the aft salon exterior door. During this time a new door was fabricated for the main cabin and installed. Upon relaunch and final cleaning of the bilge we noted a slow leak from the keel area. The owner had noted some blisters on the forward hull during the haul-out and survey, so it was hauled back out, sandblasted, filled any blisters, and added three coats of primer and three coats of bottom paint.
While transiting the ICW in the Norfolk area the vessel hit a stump, so when the boat arrived in Maine it was hauled out, inspected for shaft alignment, and ended up removing the starboard propeller for repair at Nautilus Marine. The prop was reinstalled by Front Street.
Front Street had delays in completing the work and the vessel was delivered to the owner and placed on a mooring on October 8th. Journeys End was notified to haul both the Luna Maris and the owner's sailboat at that time and to transport them to heated winter storage. A strong coastal storm on October 28 resulted in both vessels leaving their moorings and going aground at Snow Marine Park. The Luna Maris sustained very minor damage and ended up on the beach laying on her port side. She was hauled immediately the morning after the storm and transported to Johanson’s Boat Works for repairs. Repairs were estimated to be around $ 15,212 and included the repair of minor fiberglass scratches on the keel and rudder, refastening and repair of the swim platform, and repainting the bottom. The port shaft was bent as was the port propeller. We ended up having Nautilus repair the prop and replaced the port shaft with new one.
The owner had planned to Cetol all of the teak on the boat, and to repair some cracks in the fiberglass paint at the base of the fly bridge, so while the boat was in an inside heated workspace he contracted with Johanson’s to do that work. All of the exterior teak on the boat has been sanded and painted with 5 coats of Cetol. The flybridge area was sanded, fiberglass cracks were repaired, and repainted with Awlgrip white. The area looks new.
The final upgrade is that the upper flybridge now has a Raymarine Axiom 7 Display which is connected with the ES98 in the main cabin.
The total electronics package includes the following:
