The yacht Bon Secour diverted for Bermuda yesterday after a large rope or net fouled her propellor and pulled the engine off its mounts in the engine space. Sadly the trouble didn't end there and the large piece of abandoned net went on to foul her rudder and make her almost unmanagable.
From evening radio schedule 11/14/01:
The UK Royal Fleet Auxiluary Gold Rover, steamed to Bon Secour's position to assist the crew after they were unable to make controllable headway towards Bermuda. A diver heroically went over the side in an attempt to clear whatever had fouled the propeller and rudder, but was unable to do so. Gold Rover attempted to take Bon Secour in tow back to Bermuda, about 250 miles away, but were unable to do so because of seas and winds. The crew of Bon Secour was safely transferred aboard Gold Rover, which is now headed back to Bermuda. Bon Secour, unfortunately, had to be abandoned.
Elsewhere in the fleet, the northern-most vessels were still experiencing easterly winds in the 20 to 30 knot range, while those further south were already in the pattern of diminishing winds. Bravado reported southeast winds at only 5 knots, and they are anticipating arriving in Virgin Gorda by 6 in the morning, Nov. 15. For some vessels, the winds were southeast and south-southeast, putting them hard on the wind and making for a bumpy, wet ride.
