img5842Winners of SAIL Magazine's Top 10 Sailboat Awards for 2002, sponsored by Interlux, and SAIL's Industry Leadership Award, will be announced on January 24 at the Atlantic Sail Expo Industry Awards Reception. The event is co-sponsored by Sail America, producer of the Sail Expo boat shows.

This year's SAIL Top 10 Sailboat Awards are for new sailboats introduced into the American marketplace in 2001. Top 10 sailboats are judged on safety, comfort, performance, construction quality, value for money and are selected according to how well each boat meets the purpose for which it was designed and built.

Thirty-six sailboats were test-sailed and evaluated with SAIL's boat-testing system by a panel of four judges, including Nigel Calder, Tom Dove, Charles Duane and Bill Springer. Their evaluations along with the votes of SAIL readers, who sent in ballots from September-December 2001 issues, combine to determine the winners.

SAIL's Industry Leadership Award, instituted in 1993 to recognize individuals who have shaped the course of the sailing industry for success and growth, will also be presented.

Pittman Innovation Award Nominees on display

Nominees and winners of SAIL's Pittman Innovations Awards competition will be on display for the first time in one exhibit space at the Strictly Sail Miami show, 14-19 February at Miamiarina. Sail America is donating free exhibit space for the display, officials said.

To date, over 60 products have been entered in the competition and will be judged on overall design, originality, ease of use, price/value ratio and the impact on the sailing marketplace.

The Freeman K. Pittman Wards for Innovation were created in 1997 by SAIL to recognize and reward sailing equipment manufacturers for creating new and innovative products. Qualifying for this year's awards are products introduced between July 2000 and December 2001.
