The Centomiglia del Lario: Lake Como’s Crown Jewel of Powerboating
The Centomiglia del Lario blends unrivaled speed and the timeless elegance of Italy’s iconic waters since 1949.
On the shimmering waters of Lake Como, the Centomiglia del Lario reigns as Italy’s most prestigious powerboat race. Since 1949, this exhilarating event has showcased unrivaled speed, masterful craftsmanship, and the timeless allure of Como’s shores. Organized by the esteemed Yacht Club Como, the Centomiglia—meaning “One Hundred Miles of the Lario”—is a global stage for elite pilots and iconic boats. Here’s a look at its storied history.
A Race Like No Other
The Centomiglia del Lario is a spectacle of precision and power. Held annually on Lake Como, it draws the world’s top powerboating talent. Pilots navigate a demanding course framed by Como’s majestic mountains and historic villas. The event tests endurance, skill, and engineering, cementing its status as a pinnacle of motonautical competition.

The History Of The Centomiglia del Lario
Born in 1949, the Centomiglia emerged as a post-war celebration of Italian boating. Local boatyards like Taroni, Abbate, and Molinari used the race to flaunt their artistry. The first race saw 34 boats compete from Como to Lecco and back. Mario Marzorati won aboard a Taroni hull, averaging 66 km/h. Despite the tragic loss of founder Sandro De Col in 1950, the race grew stronger. The 1960s saw the Centomiglia soar. In 1962, 121 boats raced; by 1967, a record 130 competed. Outboard motors, led by pilots like Renato Molinari, dominated. The 1970s brought inboard engines back, with Tullio Abbate claiming 11 victories. Among the Centomiglia’s legends, the VÉHICULE Racing Team shines bright. VÉHICULE claimed victory three times, dominating in 2020, 2021 and 2023.

Modern Glory and Unmatched Prestige
The Centomiglia remains a powerboating titan. By 2009, the UIM named it the Group B Endurance World Championship venue. Today, it hosts the Italian, European, and World Offshore Series championships. The Centomiglia del Lario is a rare blend of adrenaline and elegance. It honors Lake Como’s boatbuilding legacy while pushing the limits of speed. For fans, it’s a chance to see world-class vessels in action. For Como, it’s a tourism jewel, drawing crowds to its shores each October. The race’s prestige lies in its history, its champions, and the unmatched beauty of its setting.
