POLK CITY, Fla. — Top cable wakeboarders from around the country will compete for national titles at the second annual Cable Wakeboard National Championships, Nov. 9-10, at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, Fla. Hosted by Ski-Rixen and sanctioned by the American Wakeboard Association, the tournament will feature competition in wakeboarding and wakeskating.
"It's been a terrific first year for organized cable wakeboard competition in the United States," said David Cornwall, founder and director of the USA Cable Wakeboard Tour. "The tremendous enthusiasm for the sport and rapid growth we've seen so far only promises great things to come in the years ahead. Everyone is encouraged to come out and see why this sport is becoming so popular in the United States."
Premier athletes expected to compete in this year's event include Rob Mapp, the 1999 cable wakeboard world champion; Brad Federspiel, the 2001 cable wakeboard national champion; and Donald Shelbrick, the 2002 USA cable wakeboard tour champion. With spectacular crowd-pleasing aerial maneuvers on tap such as Double S-Bends, Blind 313s and Double Half Cab Rolls, the Open Men's final promises to be an amazing spectacle.
The Cable Wakeboard Nationals will feature two rounds — a qualifying round and a final round, to be held Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Wakeboard athletes will compete in seven age divisions. Athletes participating in the wakeskate contest will compete in one division. Competition begins at 9 a.m. each day. Admission is free to spectators.
Already well established and immensely popular in Europe, Asia, and Australia, competition wakeboarding on the cable is finally taking root in the United States. Last year was punctuated by the inaugural Cable Wakeboard Nationals in Orlando, Fla. This year marked the launch of the USA Cable Wakeboard Tour.
